Journal Writings
The following topics are to be used to make up missed journal writings during the
course of the Fundamentals of Computers course and Technical Computer
Applications course and or for Extra Credit.
Students are responsible for making up all missed work when absent from class.
You may select any of the following to make up missed work or for extra credit and all writing will be heavily graded for content and quantity.
One page - How are the Internet and World Wide Web used?
One page – How many appliances in your kitchen have a
computer component?
One page – Have family members reduced their television viewing time with
playing online games or surfing the Internet?
One page – Respond to your reading of Chapter 2 by writing about your reactions, evaluations, and reflections about the first time you used the Internet.
One page – Respond to your reading of Chapter 3 by writing about your reactions, evaluations, and reflections about the first time you used word processing software.
One page - One page – Respond to your reading of Chapter 4
by writing about your reactions, evaluations, and reflections about when you
have considered buying a computer.
Example: Did you shop online, at a local dealer, or at a large retail
store?
What type of processor did you buy?, How much memory
was in the PC?, How many bays?
One page – What experience have you had with voice recognition?
One page – What do you do to reduce the chances of experiencing repetitive
strain injuries?
One page – Do you purchase recyclable printer supplies, such as toner or ink-jet cartridges?
One page – Where would you dispose of old monitors and printers, computers and used toner?
One page – Should all employers accommodate the needs of physically challenged employees by making computers accessible?
One page – Have you used USB flash drives, smart cards, or Zip disks?
One page – How do you care for your floppy disks?

20 slides - From the classroom magazine library; pick a topic that has been discussed in the Fundamentals of Computers Class.
20 slides - Develop a PPt on a safety subject centering on
the computer industry. Ex. - Electrical safety while working on a PC.,
Wireless network encryption. Installing CAT5 cable in a building.
Excel
Design a spreadsheet to calculate weekly expenses of your expenditures for a two week period.
Design a spreadsheet to maintain your grades for the 9 week semester; grade-point averages are to be calculated using the WV State Department Grading Scale.
Access
Design a database to maintain your MP3 or DVD
movie collection. Database must be able to print report on queries made.
